Format

20 teams from six different continents will compete for the title Junior World Champion 2009. The teams will be placed in four pools (A, B, C and D) of five for the preliminary round. Each pool´s teams will play each other once. The winner earns three points, the loser zero. In the event of a draw both teams receive one point. The teams will be ranked according to the number of points each has accumulated in the competition.

The top two ranked teams of pool A, B, C and D proceed to the Medal Round Pool (E and F). Each pool contains four teams now which play each other once. Both third ranked teams play each other for the final rankings 5 and 6 as well as both fourth ranked teams play each other for the final rankings 7 and 8.

The top two of Pool E and F will proceed to the semi-final. The winner of Pool E plays the second ranked of Pool F and the winner of Pool F plays the second ranked of Pool E. The winners of the semi-finals reach the final. The losers of the semi-finals play the Bronze Medal match.

The third and fourth ranked teams of pool A, B,C and D proceed to the Non-Medal Round Pools (G and H) to compete for the final rankings 9 to 16. Each pool contains four teams now which play each other once.The winner of Pool G plays the winner of Pool H in the match for the 9th and 10th final ranking. The seconds of Pool G and H play each other for the final rankings 11 and 12, the thirds for the final rankings 13 and 14 and the fourths for the final ranking 15 and 16.

The fifth ranked team in pool A, B, C and D proceed to Pool I, also a Non-Medal Round, to compete for the rankings 17 to 20. All teams in Pool I play each other once. The winner of Pool I plays the second of Pool I in the 17th and 18th final ranking match. The third plays the fourth for the final ranking 19 and 20.
